Culture and Whistleblowing An Empirical Study of Croatian and United States Managers Utilizing Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions.A. Assad Tavakoli, John P. Keenan & B. Cranjak-Karanovic - 2003 - Journal of Business Ethics 43 (1-2):49-64.
Leaders and managers of today's multinational corporations face a plethora of problems and issues directly attributable to the fact that they are operating in an international context. With work-sites, plants and/or customers based in another country, or even several countries, representing a vast spectrum of cultural differences, international trade and offshore operations, coupled with increased globalisation in respect to political, social and economic realities, contribute to new dilemmas that these leaders must deal with. Not the least of these being a (...)

Hemagglutinin is a major virulence factor of influenza viruses and plays an important role in viral pathogenesis. Analysis of amino acid changes, epitopes’ regions, glycosylation and phosphorylation sites have greatly contributed to the development of new generations of vaccine. The hemagglutinins of 10 selected isolates, 8 of 2010 and 2 of 2013 samples were sequenced and analyzed by several bioinformatic softwares and the results were compared with those of 3 vaccine isolates. The study detected several amino acid changes related to (...)

Knowing God via Negativa.Gholamhossein Tavakoli - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 8:263-274.
Some of the most well known figures in three main cultures, Islam, Christianity and Judaism, defend negative theology. They believe that God doesn’t have any positive attribute and that no positive knowledge of Him is possible. Others, who are in majority, are anxious of agnosticism. Maimonides the great Jewish philosopher tries to relive this anxiety. He proposes negative knowledge arguing that in terms of negation we become closer to some knowledge of Him, though His nature still remains out of access. (...)

An investigation into the argumentation in dialogic media genres: The case of sport talk show interviews.Momene Ghadiri & Mansoor Tavakoli - 2011 - Discourse and Communication 5 (3):273-288.
This study tried to investigate the type of argumentation found in media discourse data. A case in point was the sport talk show interview. The data included an interview extracted from the Iranian popular sport show, Navad, broadcast every Monday by Channel 3 in Iran. The interview was with the former president of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Analysis of the data was done within the framework of Toulmin’s conception of argument as a form of conversation. (...)

Persian Cultural Schema of Ghesmat (Fate): The Role of Age and Education.Salva Shirinbakhsh, Abbass Eslamirasekh & Mansoor Tavakoli - 2011 - Asian Culture and History 3 (1):p144.
Ghesmat (roughly could be translated as ‘fate’) is one of the ancient cultural schemas among the Persians. This study explores the schema of ghesmat in the lives of Persian speakers as reflected in their language use among people with different age and educational level. Having introduced the schema of ghesmat in Persian, data was collected by giving a discourse completion test (DCT) to the participants of the study who were randomly chosen. The results of the analysis of data revealed that (...)

Pashmina authentication on imagery data using deep learning.Muzafar Rasool Bhat, Assif Assad, Ab Naffi Ahanger, Shabana Nargis Rasool & Abdul Basit Ahanger - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-9.
Pashmina is one of the most luxurious and finest fibres in the world. It is a special kind of wool obtained from Cashmere goats. Counterfeiting Pashmina is becoming a prevalent malpractice because of limited supply, expensive pricing and high demand in western markets. Presently, there is a lack of a low-cost and easily available approach for distinguishing authentic Pashmina apparels from other similar-looking products. Because of technological advances and cost reductions in digital image processing, we have been able to implement (...)

Kósmos Noetós: The Metaphysical Architecture of Charles S. Peirce.Ivo Assad Ibri - 2017 - Springer Verlag.
This pioneering book presents a reconstitution of Charles Sanders Peirce philosophical system as a coherent architecture of concepts that form a unified theory of reality. Historically, the majority of Peircean scholars adopted a thematic approach to study isolated topics such as semiotics and pragmatism without taking into account the author’s broader philosophical framework, which led to a poor and fragmented understanding of Peirce’s work. In this volume, professor Ivo Assad Ibri, past president of The Charles Sanders Peirce Society and (...)

The semiotic resilient mind: conflictual and agapic relationship between logical and emotional interpretants.Ivo Assad Ibri - 2020 - Cognitio 20 (2):378-391.

Palavras-chave: pragmatismo, Peirce, primeiridade, liberdade, filosofia genética.: This paper tries to show the vital (...)

Neopragmatism Viewed by Pragmaticism.Ivo Assad Ibri - 2013 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 5 (1).
There are significant differences between the neopragmatism as formulated by Rorty, based on James’ and Dewey’s pragmatism, and what Peirce, in order to distinguish his own approach from the last two thinkers, called pragmaticism. I take in this paper the concept of solidarity as a focus, from which those differences will be implied, albeit many other points could be chosen. I highlight that the usual Rorty’s sentence beginning with ‘we pragmatists…’ shall necessarily exclude Peirce. Exemplarily, I could mention the concepts (...)

Starting from the exposition of the fundamental guiding principles of Peirce's philosophy, mainly, its three categories viewed under his Phenomenology and its correlated Ontology, I conjecture about three possible dimensions of Time, considering the function of predicting the future course of events with varying degrees of certainty as the main role of our human rationality. In these three dimensions, the affection of the first of the three Peircean categories occurs with differentiated intensity, this first category precisely the one that includes (...)

We intend to reflect about (...)

    About uncertainness.Ivo Assad Ibri - 2000 - Trans/Form/Ação 23 (1):97-104.
This paper intends to expose elements of a Charles S. Peirce's epistemological doctrine, called by him Falibilism. The aim is to show how this doctrine emerge itself from the author's metaphysical theories, like his Evolutionism and categorical structure of Reality, forming a duet with his ontological conception of Chance. In fact, the Falibilism will be considered as the doctrine that is consequence of the Peirce's doble face indeterminism, i.e., at same time ontological and epistemological.

    The Heuristic Power of Agapism in Peirce's Philosophy.Ivo Assad Ibri - 2013 - Nóema 4 (2).
The first part of this essay provides an analysis of the text “The Law of Mind”, in which Peirce theorizes about the power of growth and spreading of ideas and also presents his response to the classic question about how mind can influence matter. We intended to show, from an analysis focused on the dual semantic meaning of the word “ affect ”, how the author’s rupture with the Cartesian dualism between mind and matter implies in a substantial identity between (...)

Different groups of people from a different place connected to the same network can get therapy from the same therapist at the same time using the telerehabilitation scheme. Syrian Views on Obama's Red Line: The Ethical Case for Strikes against Assad.Wendy Pearlman - 2020 - Ethics and International Affairs 34 (2):189-200.
Much ink has been spilled on the pros and cons of U.S. president Barack Obama's decision not to strike the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad after that regime launched a deadly chemical weapons attack in 2013. Often missing from those debates, however, are the perspectives of Syrians themselves. While not all Syrians oppose Assad, and not all opponents endorsed intervention, many Syrian oppositionists resolutely called for Obama to uphold his “red line” militarily. As part of the roundtable (...)

Review of Ivo Assad Ibri, Semiotics and Pragmatism. Theoretical Interfaces. [REVIEW]Nicola Ramazzotto - 2023 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 15 (2).
A deep relationship binds semiotics and pragmatism together, rooted in their common father, Charles Sanders Peirce. However, as deep as this relationship is, it is also complex and not straightforward. This is evidenced by the scant attention that post-Peircean pragmatism (and so much of contemporary pragmatism) has paid to more specifically semiotic problems and by the separation of semiotics into a science in its own right. This estrangement between semiotics and pragmatism means that today...

While there are numerous doubts, controversies and lack of consensus on alternative definitions of human death, it is argued that it is more ethical to allow people to choose either cessation of cardio-respiratory function or loss of entire brain function as the definition of death based on their own views. This paper presents the law of organ transplantation in Japan, which allows people to decide whether brain death can be used to determine their death in agreement with their family. Arguably, (...)

In this engaging Introduction, A.C. Grayling makes Wittgenstein's thought accessible to the general reader by explaining the nature and impact of Wittgenstein's views. He describes both his early and later philosophy, the differences and connections between them, and gives a fresh assessment of Wittgenstein's continuing influence on contemporary thought.
